How Slab-Based Salary Tax Works

Pakistan's salary tax system is progressive and slab-based โ€” meaning different portions of your annual income are taxed at different rates, rather than your entire salary being taxed at one flat percentage. Only the income that falls within a given slab is taxed at that slab's rate; income below it was already taxed at the lower rate(s) that applied to those earlier slabs.

This is a common point of confusion: moving into a higher tax slab does not mean your entire salary suddenly gets taxed at the higher rate โ€” only the portion of income that falls above the previous slab's threshold does.

Why Slabs Change Almost Every Year

Salary tax slabs and rates are typically revised in Pakistan's annual Federal Budget, announced around June each year, and take effect for the new fiscal year. Because of this, a slab structure that was accurate last year may already be outdated โ€” always cross-check against the current fiscal year's officially notified slabs from FBR before using a calculation for actual filing or payroll purposes.

What This Calculator Does and Doesn't Cover

This tool estimates tax purely on salary income using standard slabs. It does not account for tax credits (such as those for certain investments or donations), other income sources that might push you into a different bracket, or employer-specific benefits that may be taxed differently. For an exact figure relevant to your tax return, a payroll department or tax consultant familiar with your complete financial picture is the more reliable source.
