Understanding Gold Purity and Sarafa Weight Units

Gold sold in Pakistan is quoted mainly by two things: the weight unit (Tola, Gram, or occasionally Masha) and the purity or karat (24K, 22K, 21K, or 18K). Getting a quick, accurate estimate means understanding both.

Weight Units Explained

• 1 Tola = 12 Mashas = 11.6638 Grams — the traditional unit still used by most Sarafa Bazaar dealers.
• 1 Masha = 0.972 Grams — a smaller traditional unit, sometimes used for gold ornaments.
• 1 Gram — the international standard unit, increasingly used alongside Tola in city jewellery markets.

Why Purity Changes the Price

24K gold is considered 99.9% pure and is the benchmark rate quoted daily in the market. Jewellery is rarely made from 24K gold alone because pure gold is too soft for everyday wear — it's typically alloyed with other metals to create 22K, 21K, or 18K gold, each with progressively less pure gold content and more of the alloy metal.

The conversion formula is straightforward: (24K Rate ÷ 24) × Target Karat. For example, to find the 22K rate from a 24K rate, divide by 24 and multiply by 22 — this reflects that 22K gold contains 22 parts gold out of 24 total parts by weight.

A Practical Tip Before You Buy or Sell

Sarafa market rates can shift more than once within a single trading day depending on international gold price movement and the Dollar-Rupee exchange rate. Before a significant purchase or sale, it's worth checking the rate again at the jeweller rather than relying on a rate checked earlier in the day — and remembering that jewellers typically add making charges on top of the raw gold value, which this calculator does not include.
